Focusing on the relationship between tall buildings and sustainability, the ‘Beyond Green! – Tall Buildings in a Sustainable Future’ international symposium will take place October 10-12 at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. Due to urbanization and land being a fixed commodity, metropolitan areas become denser and can only respond with the typology of tall buildings to satisfy the demand for space. However, with respect to the provision of infrastructure, use of energy, shortage of resources and the demand for ecological compatibility there is the inevitable need to design green and sustainable cities. This seemingly contradicts the typology of tall buildings. The aim of the symposium, hosted by the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design at the university, is to evaluate and investigate in detail the green and sustainable credentials of tall buildings regarding their economy, ecology and functionality. More information on the event after the break.
The symposium is organised in cooperation with the German Sustainable Building Council, the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, the Institute for Building Physics at the University of Stuttgart, the Association for the Promotion of Architecture, Engineering and Design and the German-American Center.
The keynote lectures will be held by Christoph Ingenhoven_ingenhoven architects, Düsseldorf, Germany (CTBUH Annual Awards: 2012 Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia) and Helmut Jahn_Murphy/Jahn, Chicago, USA (CTBUH Annual Awards: 2012 Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award). Additional speakers will include Peter Oborn_Aedas, London, UK (CTBUH Annual Awards: 2012 Tall Building Innovation Award), Wong Mun Summ_WOHA, Singapore, Republic of Singapore (Silver Emporis Skyscraper Award 2007, Bronze Emporis Skyscraper Award 2009) and Prof. Manfred Hegger_ee, TU Darmstadt, Germany (U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2007 & 2009).
As a case study, the KfW Westarkade in Frankfurt, Germany (CTBUH Annual Awards: 2011 Best Tall Building Overall & Europe) will be presented and discussed by the architects and engineers involved in the project. For more information on the symposium, please visit here.
